History
While I don’t walk around with a little survey that asks questions like “Do you know where you are going to go when you die?” I talk with people almost every day that don’t consider themselves “church people.” Most people don’t have a problem with God. Most people consider spirituality to be an important aspect of their lives, especially for their children. They want their children to grow up right, but don’t think they are doing a good job of it. They think church should have the answer. They like Jesus. In fact, Jesus has a pretty high pop factor. Many people are just not sure which church they pass by on Sunday really does what Jesus did. Most of the time, however, they pass by several churches on the way to the beach or the mall; they are having breakfast at Pete’s or watching their kid play soccer; they are not thinking of what church they are missing. Somewhere along the line they decided church was for “church people” not for them. I am not surprised when I see statistics that say 90% of Ventura County residents do not attend an evangelical church. I run into that 90% all the time.
That is why three couples came together in September of 2007 to plant a church in River Park. River Park Community Church is a church for people who think church is for “church people” not for them. It is a church for people who have friends that think church is for “church people” not for them.
